Mausoleum at Kylemore Abbey

We continued exploring the Kylemore estate and the grounds were indeed very pretty. The estate is set at the foot of a hill and on the shores of a lake and it makes for a very picturesque setting. I wished that we came here with more ideal weather but such things are difficult to come by in Ireland. This type of rainy depressing weather is more the norm. The trail just follows the shoreline and we were walking until we ran into what seems to be a small house. Upon closer inspection, the house turned out to be a mausoleum.

Back when Michael Henry still owned the estate. He and his wife Margaret went on a tour of Egypt. On the River Nile, Margaret got sick dysentery and she passed away two weeks later. Her remains were brought back to Ireland rather than have her buried in a foreign country. This mausoleum is her final resting place. Additionally, a beautiful Gothic church was built. It was hard to tell that this was a mausoleum. But you can see that there is an epitaph and a cross where a door might have been. The structure is all brick and very serene. The mausoleum was built just away from the main trail probably to keep the place quiet.
