Lobster Pot

When I came back from the business trip from the United States, I was dreaming of the food which I had across the pond. Probably one of the most memorable ones and certainly the one which my good friend and I talk about the most is our meal at Don Pepe II where we had lobster. I can’t remember any other time where I had a whole lobster. Most of time it was just part of the tail or the tail turned into salad, but never a whole lobster. I was fortunate to be able to have one and I loved it. Back in Ireland, I was trying to find a place which serves lobster and I was hoping to have a treat here. One of the closest places I knew had a very promising name – Lobster Pot. It is all the way in the town of Burtonport in County Donegal.

I have never been to Burtonport but it should be easy enough to find with the magic of GPS. I dragged my friends with me in search of this place. The town seems to be in western Donegal and we decided to go for a trip around that area and hopefully try this place out. We first went to Dunlewey which is a picturesque town bay the shore Lough Dunlewey. The weather wasn’t very good then. It is always hit and miss when it comes to Irish weather. Today seems to be a miss. After taking some photos of the church ruins, we then set off for Burtonport.

I have been near the area but I never thought of going to this town. Little did I know that a gem like this place would be found here. The restaurant is along the road heading towards the pier. I guess you can say that their ingredients is as fresh as it gets. The building is decorated with a massive lobster statue, hopefully it is a sign of things to come. We quickly made our way to the restaurant since we were already starving.

The restaurant look much like an Irish pub, in fact, it probably is. The interiors were tastefully done, and their theme here is football. I don’t really care much about it as I just want my food. Their feature dish here is the the Titanic. As the name implies, it is a massive dish which all sorts of seafood in it – lobster included. We also ordered other dishes to go with this one but the Titanic is the main dish.

I hadn’t seen photos of the Titanic so I was shocked at the size of the dish. There were numerous types of seafood here, shellfish, salmon even fried ones. I would have expected the seafood here to be more plentiful since the town is by the sea. The main feature of the dish is the lobster which disappointingly was only half a tail. I would have hoped the they would be more generous with the lobster but it is probably too expensive to give away.

One thing would immediately come to mind when eating the Titanic. The food was cold, intentionally. I like my food warm and even when it is fresh seafood, I think I would appreciate a warmer meal. I understand how oysters would be fresh and cold but everything else would also be cold. This is not to say that the meal wasn’t good, it was but it was cold as well. I don’t know if you would have the option to have it warmed up but that might have raised a few eyebrows since we might not know how to eat.

Surprisingly, the Titanic wasn’t that difficult to finish. My friend and I shared the single dish but I think I would have been able to finish the dish on my own. Perhaps the layout of the dish makes it so impossibly large. Apart from it being a cold dish, I could not find any fault it is. The ingredients seem to be fresh enough. If it weren’t so remote, I would probably come here every now and then. People do come here though I don’t know if they were locals or not. However, if you are in the area it would be nice to give myself a treat once in a while.
