LOVE Park

LOVE Park in Philadelphia

LOVE Park in Philadelphia

My business trip was hastily arranged that I only got my plane tickets the previous day. I wasn’t able to plan where I would be spending my weekends here in the United States. When my good friend was off to see family, I decided to head off out of town myself. I took a bus from New York to Philadelphia to see what is there to see. The bus dropped me off at the bus station, which seemed to be near a Chinatown. I was guessing since there seemed to be quite a number of Chinese restaurants. I didn’t have a map with me but it seems that this place is well signed. Not only that there were a lot of tourists here.

The first hour was spent trying to get my bearings. I know I am already in a central location but I also want to see the sights. I followed the signs and eventually ended up at a large building which turned out to be city hall. I passed through it and I notice that there was a park with a rather prominent sign. This is the LOVE Park. Also known as the John F. Kennedy Park, the LOVE Park is so named because of the reproduction of the LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana. As you might expect of a park, there were a lot of people hanging out here and probably the best place to be that day. The sun was out and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I tried taking a photo of the LOVE sculpture but there were just too many people queuing up for their turn to take a photo with it. The line was actually quite orderly but there was a man who was causing trouble because he wasn’t falling in line. There was an argument which ensued but the queue continued.

There is also a fountain in the park and it is hard not to notice it. The water of the fountain was an unnatural blue and true enough, the water here is dyed because of different reasons. According to the wiki Blue is to remember the police officers who died in the line of duty. It was very hot that day and I was still not used to the heat. Sitting near the waters helped a bit with the water of the fountain spraying visitors. I think the park extends even further out but I don’t have time to explore that side yet.
