Going to Downhill House

From the mausoleum at Downhill Demesne, we discovered that we are quite far off from our target so we would have to head closer to the Mussenden Temple to get back to our car. This is all okay since we still have to visit what is probably the largest structure of the estate. We have already seen other parts of the estate but the most important part of the estate is where the earl bishop Frederick Hervey actually stayed. This place was supposed to be a country home. In this place, he built a country house. Downhill House is the largest structure in the estate and it is very recognizable. From where we were, it would still be a fair walk to the Downhill House but we can already see that it is not good state.

Closer Look at Downhill House

The Downhill House now is just the remains of the old house. Years have taken a toll on the house and it is in a ruined state. Perhaps most glaring is the lack of a roof. Maybe it was made from less durable material and it has rotted away over the years. The building has been here for more than two hundred years. This house or maybe palace is one of the most important places here in Downhill Demesne. It is said to be one of only a few samples of its kind in the world. I’m not sure I would be able to appreciate that fact seeing how bad it looks. We will still have to pass through this place anyway, we might as well take a look.
