Walking Through the Walls of Downhill Demesne

One does not merely go to Downhill and take a photo of the beach with the temple perched on top of it. Granted that this place was one of the film locations for the Game of Thrones, one can continue their visit by just driving down the main highway and turning left. There is an entrance to the Downhill estate and you can see some ruins up close, including the temple. There is a small entrance fee here and the rest will be explored on foot. This is a rather large estate so be prepared for a bit of walking.

This entire place is called the Downhill Demesne. I must admit that I never knew what a “demesne” was until now. Frederick Hervey who was an earl and a bishop at the same time chose this location as his country home. It is a good location for a country home with the hill overlooking the sea. I thought it was a great choice since it is naturally protected from the sea and at the same time the sea is accessible enough if they chose to go to it. The demesne didn’t start out quite well as we were just passing through the walls. There was even a flock of sheep here giving the appearance that nothing has really changed since it was first built.
