King of Tory (or Just His Car)

One of the curious things which I learned about Tory Island is that there is a king of Tory Island. Now, this king is actually sort of an chosen king. I don’t know if there is a formal election but he is chosen. The king of Tory doesn’t have any real powers but he does have duties. Among these duties are to serve as the representative of Tory and to welcome visitors to the island. Okay about that last part, he seemed to have been remiss in his duties as I was actually looking forward to see this king but he wasn’t there at the port when we disembarked. Maybe he was sick or just plain busy. Anyway, I don’t know if the king has so much free time to spend waiting to greet visitors all the time. Come to think of it, that might be the reason why there aren’t a lot of ferries plying the Tory – mainlad route.

As we were exploring the village of Tory, we came upon signs that the king is here. There was a car outside a house which told us that the king of Tory owns that car. How do I know? Well, there is a rather prominent license plate which says “king of Tory”. I don’t think there can be any doubt as who the owner of the car is. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of the owner there and it would be curious to know how often he actually uses that car given how small the village is. Maybe if he really is in a big hurry. We passed through the village but did see the king at all. Maybe he was sick. A lot of questions linger, is the car really the king’s? Or is the license plate just transferred to him when he becomes king? Can you quit? If I run into him, I would have a lot of questions to ask him.
