Geography of Carrick-a-Rede

The scenery of Carrick-a-Rede is certainly amazing. What surprised me though is the origin of this place. It is very difficult to imagine that this place has volcanic origins. I grew up in a place which was around the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and volcanoes are very common. True enough a large majority of volcanoes can be found in that area. Little did I know that Ireland would have it share of volcanoes. Having said that, the volcanoes here are extinct but they have given birth to some remarkable geography. The Carrick-a-Rede is one such place.

Carrick-a-Rede is described to be a volcano plug. What that means is that the magma has hardened in the vent of the volcano. This can sometimes cause extreme pressure build up in the volcano causing powerful explosions. It doesn’t seem that there is any danger of that happening here in Carrick-a-Rede. Still, it is very interesting to know the origins of this place In some places, you can imagine the remains of the volcano. I wasn’t sure if I was correct though. It all makes sense now, since the Giant’s Causeway area has volcanic origins as well.
