Going in Dunluce Castle

Wild Coast the Dunluce Castle in County Antrim

Wild Coast the Dunluce Castle in County Antrim

When we were planning to visit the coastal area of Antrim here in Northern Ireland, we didn’t really have a fixed itinerary coming here. All we knew was what probably is Antrim’s most famous site, but more on that later. We drove all the there from county Donegal and managed to see Dunluce Castle along the way. It seemed to be an interesting place to visit so we decided to drop by. This area of Northern Ireland seems to be dotted with numerous castles, we won’t be able to visit all of them, for now we would only be dropping by Dunluce Castle, the rest should be another trip for another day.

From the outside you can already tell that Dunluce Castle seems to be built in a rather special part of the coast. The castle is built on a large rock with steep drops on all sides. Granted that this was supposed to be for protection, it would have been very difficult to build the castle in the first place. In fact, from the entrance, Dunluce Castle is only accessible by bridge. The entrance to the castle grounds is built further away. This is where you buy your tickets and you can choose to get an audio guide. Not much of the castle is left here but there is still enough to let your imagination run wild. We were lucky to get a rare clear day here in Antrim and we will try to make the most of it.
