Santa Maria di Loreto Church in Rome

Santa Maria di Loreto Church in Rome

I was surprisingly pleased with our visit to the Altare della Patria in Rome. What started out as a rather gaudy Roman monument turned out to be a visit to an old basilica which was built very near the monument. The monument is probably the tallest in the area and it is possible to go up to the top to have a look at Rome. This is probably the best area to do it in since there are a few beautiful churches and the ancient Roman Forum just nearby. We didn’t go to the very top for the viewing since you need to pay for that.

On the way out I just noticed two churches where were across the road from the monument. I immediately thought why would they built another church so close to the one already there? Turns out I was underestimating them, there were actually two churches there side by side. One is the Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano and there other is the Santa Maria di Loreto. The two churches have large domes and it appear to me that they were just one church. They are actually separated by a small road. This proliferation of churches was very strange and I doubt that there was actually demand for a large concentration of churches in this area.
