Thoughts on the Colosseum in Rome

I was absolutely thrilled seeing the the Colosseum in Rome. It is considered on of the wonders of the world, and it is certainly one of most well known landmarks not just in Rome but the whole world. It is very good that a lot of the Colosseum has survived these centuries, it is actually almost two thousand years old. There aren’t a lot of structures which make it that long. Fortunately, great effort and luck has been made to preserve this ancient monument and it has stood the test of time. There was an earthquake which destroyed part of the Colosseum and there was no effort to restore this part all these years. Eventually, the ruins were taken and used for other purposes like houses.

You will also appreciate the skill of the ancient Romans to have built something this splendid and make it last that long. Even modern buildings don’t last that long anymore. Perhaps the ancient Romans used better quality building material? A major disappointment to me was that I didn’t get to go in the Colosseum at all. The Colosseum is closed only three times in a year and we had to go there on one of those days. I think we should have paid better attention to these. We were on a holiday after all and what makes us think that other countries didn’t have the same holiday.
