Inside the Colosseum

Peeking Through the Fence for a Glimpse of the Colosseum in Rome

I was thrilled to see the Colosseum with my own eye and not on a website or a book. Now, all that is left is to go in a have a look. Curiously enough there doesn’t seem to be the usual long queue which wait to go in the site. We were walking around the Colosseum trying to figure out how to get in. Maybe they have an underground passageway to let visitors in? Near the collapsed portion of the Colosseum, we noticed a gate and it seemed to be one of the entrances to the place. However, it was closed. Closed? How can that be. There weren’t any officers around to explain what is going on and there were hundreds of other visitors who were in the same situation as us.

Turns out no one was reading the signs. There was a sign by the gate which states the opening hours and days. The Colosseum is closed on Christmas, New Year and May 1. Turns out it was May 1. Well, I never read about that, and it was stupid of us not to have checked. We didn’t realize that May 1 was a major holiday in Italy or perhaps we were just too busy enjoying ourselves. It was a huge disappointment for me as everything would have been complete had we were able to go in the Colosseum. I probably already had an idea of what it looks like through photos, but more recently was a visit at Tarraco’s Roman amphitheater in Tarragona, Spain which is much like the Roman Colosseum right in front of me. I will be leaving Italy before my friends and they would have the chance to go in the Colosseum. I would probably have to try again next time.
