Campo di Fiori

Campo di Fiori in Rome

In our wanderings of Rome, we came upon another large square. It is probably very common in old European cities that squares are made available in city planning. We have already seen this in Piazza Navona and the Campo di Fiori is another one of these. Most of the time the piazza would be accompanied by a church, or rather, the other way around. The church usually requires a large piazza in front of it. However, I didn’t seem to see any church nearby. This place seems to be a bit rougher than the other places we have been to. It is not to say that it felt dangerous. The Campo di Fiori or Field of Flowers seemed more like a misnomer since there was no field of flowers in sight.

Perhaps the field of flowers it was referring to was the market which was set up the everyday. We just missed the market as they were already cleaning up the grounds. I thought it was interesting that they have to set up and tear down the market every single day but I guess, they do that to return the space back to the piazza. The ground was wet because they were still washing the ground from the market. I wasn’t sure what they were selling here but it might have been a wet market which probably made sense to remove any animal parts which might have fallen. Much like the other piazzas, there was a row of restaurants here and we probably would be having our dinner here.
