One of the most prominent structures in Piazza Navone is Sant’Agnese in Agone church. The baroque church occupies the center of the piazza and can be described as the most important building in the piazza. The church is dedicated to Saint Agnes, who was martyred nearby. Interestingly, the adjacent building, the Palazzo Pamphili is owned by the family of the pope, Pope Innocent X, who is a Pamphili himself. This is quite bizarre by modern standards but the pope commissions the church to be built beside their family palace. In effect, it became their family chapel. Anyway, enough of that, my friends didn’t feel like going in the church so I was going in alone. There was no fee to go in the church.

When I went in the church, I was glad that I did. It wasn’t as big as other churches have been to. In fact, I would think that it is a bit shallow. There weren’t a lot of pews as a result. However, it did make up for it in baroque art. The entire church was richly decorated, not surprising since it is a church commissioned by a pope, and not only that, it is attached to the family palace, so it needs to be very beautiful. The central dome of the church is probably the most impressive feature as it is adorned with numerous paintings.
