It was probably enough for me that the Saint Peter’s Basilica is so massive, but the builders also made it a point that this would be a very beautiful church. While I can’t really say that all of this is new to me, since a lot of the churches that I have been to have similar designs but this was just taken into a whole new level. The architecture of Saint Peter’s Basilica is supposedly Renaissance Baroque. It seems to be a combination of styles. A lot of the church that I have been to here in Europe tend towards Gothic. I think I am starting to be able to distinguish the styles but I still need to time to figure out which is which. I am into architecture but probably that that much to be able to immediately identify which style is which.

One common theme of these large churches and basilicas here in Europe is the presence of a large amount of art. Although I can say that these are to make sure that the house of God is fit for him, I can’t deny that some more earthly desires where in play here. Back in the day, the popes held power much like kings and emperors did, it is not therefore surprising that the basilicas be treated as their own palaces. In a lot of ways, these churches have indeed felt like palaces. It is my opinion though, that the church has become much humbler and less like royalty. I can’t deny that no matter how humble our pope is, there is no denying that he deserves a lot of respect and support in his mission.
