Impressive Facade of the Conciergerie

I didn’t really have much in mind when we were wandering along the River Seine. The banks of the River Seine have a lot of beautiful buildings that there is enough to see as it is. These buildings, the river and the bridges that cross it, form the UNESCO World Heritage site. Hundreds of years of history are along these banks and it is well deserving of the list. The River Seine has a river island where the Pont Neuf crosses the river. The Île de la Cité or the Island of the City is another landmark here in the river. I was a bit surprised to see that the river island was very well developed. There were already a lot of buildings here and no doubt that there were just as historical as the others.

Already, we were passing by a lot of important looking buildings which we can only have a look at from the outside. We didn’t really have time to explore every single museum here and we were content to look at the beautiful architecture. One of these buildings was the Conciergerie, although the name might imply that it is something quite welcoming, it actually far from it. The Conciergerie used to be a palace back then and it shows. It really does look castle like in a fairy tale fashion. It is interesting that there is another palace here with the Louvre Palace so close. Somewhere along the way, the palace eventually was used as a prison. One of the more well known prisoners of the Conciergerie was Marie Antoinette.
