Casa Batlló

It was an uneventful train ride from Tarragona back to Barcelona. I thought that the visit to Tarragona was quite nice. It was a bit off the beaten track, but not too much. I would have wanted to visit the aqueduct that was outside the town but we didn’t know how to get there. I would have also wanted to explore another UNESCO World Heritage site which was sort of nearby but it was not that easy to get to. The train timings weren’t very good and we weren’t sure if there were direct buses heading back to Barcelona. Anyway, it was still a great visit. We finally arrived in Barcelona and decided that there was still time to visit some of the more famous sights which apparently was within walking distance from our place.

Unfortunately, the one pulling the group didn’t have very good map reading skills and we ended up getting lost several times. We took it all in stride since we get to see other places along the way. The day was long so we don’t have to hurry back to the apartment. The place we were looking for is the Casa Batlló which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site group named “Works of Antoni Gaudí”, as the name implies there are a number of locations which are part of this grouping. The first of which we get to visit is the Casa Batlló. Apparently, it was along one of the major shopping streets of Barcelona so it wasn’t really difficult to find, unless you are following a map. Anyway, there was a massive queue outside the Casa Batlló and we gave up trying to get in the place. I have seen photos of the inside and they look really out of this world. From my understanding, Antoni Gaudí was commissioned to work on a lot of structures but was only able to complete two of them. From the looks of his work, you might be wondering if it was because he was too busy or the commissioners found the design too unconventional. I must admit that I find the design a little bit hard to understand and appreciate, but the more you look at it the more you would come to see the beauty of his designs.
