The Romans had a very complex society when they were in charge of Spain. We had already explored the Roman Amphitheater of Tarraco and that is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters in Spain. Almost next to it is another far larger entertainment center. The Circo Romano or Roman Circus is one of the main structures to be built in Roman Tarraco. Tarraco was back then the capital of Roman Spain, so it is not surprising that a lot of important structures were built here. With all the important people that live here, it is imperative that they have the best Spain has to offer. Of course, the occasional visit by the Roman emperor also helps.

The Roman Circus can be considered as the ancient equivalent of the stadium. This was where large activities or performances are held. You could think of it as the Olympics back then. The stadium was built to support 25,000 people, yes, it is that large. Most of the time, there would be horse or chariot races which are very popular. Back then they already have the equivalent of sports superstars much like how we have basketball or football stars. In a lot of ways, things haven’t really changed. It is very interesting to see all this.
