We went to the seaside city of Tarragona here in Catalonia to get a feel of Catalonia away from Barcelona. Being a seaside town, it has a nice feeling of a small town. In fact, Tarragona is a well known day trip from Barcelona. We lost track of the tourism information center so we were just vaguely wandering towards the general direction of the ancient town. We were basically following the highway, and I was wondering why the highway kept going up. It was as if it was a flyover. Anyway, it provided us great views of the sea. However, a bigger surprise awaited us.

After the turn of the highway, we were greeted by the sight of the remains of a Roman Amphitheater. This is the start of our exploration of the Tarragona which happens to contain a UNESCO World heritage site. The official name of the site is the Archeological Ensemble of Tarraco. Tarraco is the old name of Tarragona and most of the remains here are from the time when the Romans were in charge of large parts of Spain. The Roman Amphitheater here at Tarraco is the first of the many ruins we will be visiting here at Tarraco. I’m really looking forward to it.
