Mixture of Design at the Alcazar de Segovia

Beautiful Ceiling at a Room in the Alcazar de Segovia

The throne room at the Alcazar de Segovia was surprisingly modest. The throne themselves were nothing more that slightly fancier wooden chairs and were nothing like the thrones that I imagined to be fit for kings. The chairs were on an elevated platform as most thrones tend to be. The room itself was uninteresting that is until you look up. It seems that here in Europe, much attention is also given the ceilings of any structure. In modern times, the ceiling isn’t really given much attention, but here, it seems that the ceiling is given the most attention. The designs here of the ceiling give that Arab or Islamic feel and it is not surprising since Arab artisans where called in to design these elements.

It was not just the throne room that was given this treatment but also the rooms that come after the throne room. I wasn’t sure why the first room wasn’t designed that way. Gold seems to be a prominent color here as there was very liberal use of it here. It does come to be a strange mixture of artistry as you have Arab inspired designs mix with the very western stained glass windows. I guess Spain is one of these places where such designs have successfully mixed.
