Visiting old places like this give you a chance to know about the history of the area and the country in general. As it turns out, the cathedral of Segovia wasn’t the first cathedral of the Old Town of Segovia. The first cathedral was but across the alcazar or the palace, however, this had the unfortunate position of being a good strategic position when attacking the palace. The rebels of that time attacked the defenders of the palace who were also holed up in the cathedral. The rebels were attacking supposedly to protect the relics of the cathedral, despite pleas to cease the attacks, it continued and by the end of the siege, the cathedral was no more.

Because of this the cathedral’s replacement was built further inside the city walls around the Plaza Mayor. It is built in Gothic style with typical soaring columns and ornate decorations. The cathedral was built in the 1500s and it is noted for its almost uniform style. Curiously, the main dome of the church is not Gothic as this was completed almost a century later. Inside, the Segovia Cathedral is a wonderful work of art and it is worth taking your time to visit this cathedral. It doesn’t seem to be as ornate as the Cathedral of Toledo. If I probably never seen the Cathedral of Toledo first, I would be very impressed with this one. The tour of the cathedral normally starts with the chapels around the church and moves towards the interior of the church. Let’s start exploring!
