When building a town or a city, the people back then normally take the features of the land into account. Back then, invasions were done by land so protection from these invasions became a factor in the founding of a city. The Historic City of Toledo is a great example of this kind of planning. The city is built on top of a hill where lookouts can easily see any approaching invaders. From the highest point here, which is probably the Alcazar’s tower you can see very far. Additionally, being on top of a hill allows Toledo to have the advantage as it is easier to defend when you are shooting down instead of up.

The second major feature taken into account in the building of Toledo is the river itself. The Rio Tajo winds its way through the landscape in this area and it is specifically on that bend of the river where there happened to be a hill that the city was built. The city now has a natural moat which protects it from invaders. Add the city walls and you have a very well defended city. No wonder this place has survived for so long and has prospered throughout the centuries. These days, there are roads which follow the river and bridges which cross the Rio Tajo. I don’t supposed they care much about invaders these days.
