Inside the Historic City of Toledo

I didn’t really get any proper research on the Historic City of Toledo so I was just trying to follow what was on the map. I didn’t even know how to get to the town center as I was just following the main road up to the town. The slope wasn’t really that bad. What made it uncomfortable was the afternoon sun. I wasn’t used to blazing sun anymore and it was making the climb a little more difficult. Add the fact that I had to carry along a winter jacket which was only useful that morning. I guess that is what is so unpredictable about spring. One moment you are cold, the next moment it is hot again. Actually, the air itself was quite cool, but the direct sun was really hot.

By this time, I was already starting to see some of the architecture which the Historic City of Toledo was known for. The Mudéjar architecture has been integrated into the designs of the buildings here, old and new, probably to keep up appearances as well. It is also a source of pride for the Spanish since this is a design they can truly call their own. They do have this penchant for using earthy colors on their buildings which tends to give the town a more homogeneous look. Toledo was once the envy of the entire country of Spain, that was until the rise of Madrid as the capital of Spain. From hereon, the fortunes of Toledo head south and the city emptied leaving only the old buildings. That might have been a blessing in disguise as much of the architecture of Toledo was preserved. Now, it is popular day trip from nearby Madrid.
