Toledo Railway Station

Toledo is a short trip from the capital city of Madrid in Spain. I took a high speed train to get here and I was here in no time. It would seem that the train still has somewhere else to go so it would be important for passengers to know where there are headed and where the train currently it. There are announcements on the train so as long as you do not fall asleep it should be okay. Entering the city by train, I didn’t see anything interesting from afar. There were a lot of rather run down buildings near the train station which led me to believe that this wasn’t a very nice place. I was in for a surprise when I entered the train station.

The railway station at Toledo wasn’t very large, however it was the design of the station that was special. It was unlike any other European style building I have seen. Actually, this is quite representative of the uniqueness of Toledo. Toledo was once a cauldron for people of different religions – Christians, Muslims and Jews. It is through this unique mixture of people that Toledo acquired its unique architectural style. The train station here in Toledo as clear Moorish influences. I have seen enough of these types of buildings to know their origins. This particular style found in Spain is called Mudéjar.

Apparently, there is a sub style of Mudéjar called Neo-Mudéjar, and the railway station here at Toledo is said to be of this type. Despite how it looks, it was fairly recently built in the early 1900s. The railway station was designed this way to keep with the style unique to Spain and of course Toledo itself. Now declared a monument, it is brought to the modern age with its integration with the high speed rail network I just used.
