Finally, after a fifteen minutes of waiting, the other group emerged from the passage tomb. Actually, there was one rather large tourist didn’t managed to make it inside. This wasn’t due to claustrophobia but it was the small inside. I didn’t think it was that small until the visitor had to come out. We were warned by our tour guide that the passage tomb is very narrow, so backpacks should be removed and carried in. This is also to avoid damaging anything inside the passage tomb. Another thing noteworthy is what is called a roof box which is built on top of the main entrance. It is a rectangular opening which lets the light in. The Newgrange Stone Age Passage Tomb is called a passage tomb for a reason, it seems there is only one way in or out of this tomb.

Despite how it looks inside, the was very cramped inside. There was a narrow passage which leads from the entrance to the center of the passage tomb, arguably the most important part of the tomb. There were portions where it was very narrow I had to walk sideways to go in. No wonder larger visitors will need to turn back. Inside the tomb, was expectedly dark, however, there were electric lights fitted here for visitors. The passage tomb was also remarkably dry considering the kind of weather Ireland has. The roof of the tomb is watertight and there was no way water leaks inside. There were also grooves on the roof to let water flow.
