Thoughts on Donegal Castle

Elegant Donegal Castle in Donegal Town

Donegal Castle turned out to be a three story Gaelic fortress steeped in history. I came to know more about Gaelic history and how Donegal Castle seemed to play an important part of this. Exploring Donegal Castle shouldn’t take very long maybe at most an hour. The castle is simple and yet it has a certain elegance which earned it the respect of the English. No wonder, they quickly rebuilt the castle after it was deliberately destroyed by the departing Gaelic chieftains.

The rest of the castle is a skeleton of what remains of the castle. There was a shorter structure to adjacent to the castle and I can’t even imagine what it was originally used for. One parts left here were the walls, leaving behind a hollow interior. Inside there were part of the structure still lying around. It seems like a giant jigsaw puzzle, which I don’t think will ever be completed. Outside is the small garden area which is still green at the time of our visit. It was nice to contrast the castle with the green lawn here. However, there was all there is to it, we would be moving from Donegal Castle and hopefully see more interesting places.
