Ruins at Melmore Head

Grand Views of the Atlantic From Melmore Head

We finally made it to the top of the hill beside Melmore Head. It was an easy climb for me as the slope wasn’t really that steep. While the trail itself wasn’t very well marked we still made it up there in one piece. The top was stark and there weren’t even trees here. I could imagine that it was because of the powerful winds where may blow here from time to time which discourages the growth of tall trees. On the other hand while much plant life apart from grass wasn’t able to take root here. Man has made his presence here. We already saw what I could only assume to be a memorial to a deceased person in the form of a pile of stones. There was yet another mark which man has left in this isolated part of Donegal.

Walking further on the top of the hill, I could see that there more pieces of evidence that show that man has been here. And what better evidence could be than a house. Actually, it was a house. There is a large pile of stones even larger than the previous one and it seems to be the ruins of an old house. I do not know who would want to live in such a place, but one thing is for sure, that person loved great views. The house has grand views of the Atlantic Coast but it is no more. Much of the walls of the house has been torn down probably by the winds ripping through the area. The tallest part of the structure that is left is what I assume to the chimney. I’m sure they would need it here.
