Murals of Derry-Londonderry

Impressive Mural at Free Derry

I had no idea what were beyond the walls of Derry-Londonderry until someone recommended to me to visit the outer areas, at least the ones near the walls. Apparently, there is a place called Free Derry which is somewhat a stronghold of the nationalists who are fighting for independence here. I was a bit apprehensive to visit this seemingly volatile region of the city but it seems my fears were unfounded. There were a few Irish flags flying here which kind of surprised me since the flags were brazenly flying in what is recognized to be British soil. The main feature of this place are the apartment blocks here.

The apartment blocks here weren’t that special it is what is painted on them that is worth visiting there. The walls of the apartment blocks were painted with huge murals which tell the story of the struggle of Northern Ireland over the years. Most of the paintings here have a modern time frame meaning the appear to be from more recent decades. There were photos of rebels being dispersed with tear gas and one more interesting one which I never had an inkling of. It seems that Cuba’s Che Guevara had Irish roots. There was a mural dedicated to him, perhaps taking inspiration from his own struggle in Cuba. You could also say that the Irish connection may have fueled Che Guevara’s revolutionary struggle.
