Going to the Murals of Derry-Londonderry

When I was just outside the walls of the Derry-Londonderry, a friendly chap advised me where to visit when in Derry-Londonderry. Most of the places he mentioned, I already knew or I already planned on visiting. However, one of them was new to me. He mentioned something about murals and how they are so world famous, people from all over the world come to Derry to see it. I was thinking to myself, if it is so famous, how come I have never heard of it. Anyway, to get to the Murals, I needed to get out of the walled city first. I was advised, to climb on the walls to get an idea of where the murals are.

I needed to get to the residential area of Derry-Londonderry. I was a bit apprehensive about visiting this area since I knew a bit of its turbulent history. Let’s just say that the place has simmered down quite a bit though you can still see a lot of resentment in this area. For example, there is a welcome sign for visitors saying “You are now Entering Free Derry”. The sign was vandalized and changed to “You are not Entering Free Derry”. There are also the murals of course. These are huge paintings painted on the side of the apartment blocks which are around three stories high. Most tell stories of the continuing struggle of Derry to be free of the monarchy. This is a complicated situation and I don’t really know much about it. Maybe visiting this place would give me a better understanding of the sentiments of the people.
