Austins Department Store at the Diamond in Derry-Londonderry

I am in the middle of exploring other parts of the city of Derry-Londonderry which I wasn’t able to explore the last time. I only got to explore the wall area of the city and I thought that was already quite interesting. It seems that Derry-Londonderry has some more to offer. I was still enamored with the English style of the buildings here that I couldn’t help but keep taking photos of them. One of the major places to see these kinds of architecture is at the Diamond which is at the center of the walled city of Derry. Among these, one of the buildings stood out for its remarkable architecture.

The Austins Department Store is arguably one of the more beautiful buildings here in Derry-Londonderry. It sits on the periphery of the Diamond, thus occupying prime real estate. That position is not undeserved though. Austins Department Store is the world’s oldest independent department store. It has been in existence for 180 years! It predates more well known department stores such as Harrod’s and Macy’s. The building itself is remarkably well maintained and it has a restaurant on top giving you good views of the city of Derry. I don’t like going into department stores as I was content to taking photos of the buildings. I think it would look better at night, but that is a story for a different time.
