One of the star attractions of Glenveagh National Park is the Glenveagh Castle. The castle is built on a nice location along the shores of the Glenveagh Castle. John Adair originally established this area and developed much of it. So as to not ruin the view, he chased out people living in the estate. Cold hearted as it is, I could understand his reluctance to share this land with others, a view like this is hard to get by. This land was then purchased by Henry McIllhenny in 1937 and subsequently returned to Ireland in the latter half of the 20th century. Naturally, people living in this rather isolated part of Ireland would need a place to stay, thus was Glenveagh Castle born.

Rather than a castle, you can considered Glenveagh Castle to be a rather grand house. It wasn’t a castle that I had in my mind where knights and kings would live. Perhaps my imagination was just too wild? For my first visit to a castle ever, this was a bit underwhelming as I was expecting something a little more grand. There is no doubt that the location of Glenveagh Castle is top notch. I think it would be worthwhile exploring the grounds of the castle first.
