Glenveagh National Park Exploration

Beautiful Valley Lake at Glenveagh National Park

Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal is one of the few national parks of Ireland. It is located in a rather desolate part of county Donegal as we would be passing seemingly endless tracts of uninhabited land. The mountains along the way were not particularly tall but they do seem to made out of solid rock. Needless to say, the terrain here is truly rugged and untamed. I thought it was brilliant that the government decided to build roads going to these places. Perhaps to bring in the tourism dollars/euros or at least spread the money around. Signs pointing to the national park ensure that you won’t get lost. However, a driving app would still be handy.

What I discovered here in this part of the country is that mobile phone reception can be very spotty. You wouldn’t be surprised to find out that your phone has suddenly lost its signal and it is now roaming, owing to the proximity to Northern Ireland. I was told that data roaming is okay in this area since the telcos here have made agreements about this, however, I’m still not taking any chances on getting billed for data roaming. Anyway, we were already a Glenveagh National Park and Google Maps agrees. This is a large national park and there are numerous trails we can take to explore the area. Since we have kids with us, we will only go the easy route. There is a well marked path in the park, probably the most popular one and we will be taking that one for now. I haven’t done this kind of thing for a while and I am looking forward to exploring Glenveagh National Park.
