Crossing the River Foyle at the Peace Bridge in Derry-Londonderry

If you have been aware of the history of Northern Ireland, you would have known that its recent history has been anything but peaceful. For most of its modern existence, Ireland has been struggling for its independence ever since the English came and took over. Most parts of Ireland are now under the Republic but there is still that irritant called Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland has been under British rule for some time now and it has developed large cities here such as Derry-Londonderry and Belfast. However, there are still a lot of people who pursue a united Ireland. Looking at their history, it is indeed understandable that Northern Ireland should be owned by the Irish, however, that remains to be seen. For now, the British government is pursuing a policy of assimilation where Northern Ireland it brought closer to the rest of the kingdom. One of these steps is the construction of the Peace Bridge.

A Look Back at the City of Derry-Londonderry from the Peace Bridge

Peace Bridge is a modern bridge crossing the river Foyle in the city of Derry-Londonderry. As its name implies, it is meant to bridge the gap between the people who want to stay with the British, they call them the Waterside and the people who want Irish unity, the cityside. The purpose of the bridge is also to make it easier for the Waterside and the Cityside folk to intermingle and thus forget any animosity towards each other. I doubt that a simple bridge would be enough to fix decades of turmoil, but the bridge does make for a pretty way to cross the river. The river itself isn’t very narrow and it is a nice walk to cross the river. From the other side you can see the city of Derry-Londonderry. It is a pity there is no higher vantage point to see the view of the city from the Waterside.
