My experience with walled cities has always been the same. The walls are meant to keep invaders away so much of the original town was built within or nearby the walls. As you might, major structures such as government buildings are all there, including non government ones. In Europe, the church usually comes hand in hand with the government back in the day. One of the most significant structures here in the walled city is Saint Columb’s Cathedral.

It seems that Saint Columba is really a very influential figure in this part of the world. Not surprising since it was he who spread the Gospel in Ireland. This is the second cathedral that I have been to which is dedicated to him. However, this is a cathedral of the Church of Ireland an Anglican church. The one in Letterkenny is a Catholic cathedral. Having said that, the two churches bear very striking similarities. This is apparently the second one to be built since the first one was torn down to serve as part of the city walls. The present structure was built in the 1600s, still quite old. Apparently, this cathedral is the first Protestant Cathedral to be built in Europe.
