I was surprised to know that the designers of the Kunming Changshui International Airport is the well known architectural firm SOM. They have a lot of notable projects worldwide and in China as well, notably, the Jinmao Tower in Shanghai, World Trade Center in Beijing and the Burj Kalifa in Dubai. I was half expecting a Chinese firm to be handling this but SOM certainly did a good job incorporating Chinese elements into the design of the building. This is quite evident at the main entrance of the terminal.

There were numerous “ribbons” adorning the glass walls of the terminal, somehow evoking a feel of Chinese-ness. You know, the types you see in traditional Chinese dances. I am no engineer, but I don’t know whether those ribbons also serve the purpose to holding the roof up. Nevertheless, this was a very nice touch to see in an airport terminal. It certainly gives the building a lot more character. At this point in the terminal building, there were already a lot of people. Well wishers and family were here waiting for the passengers. It still wasn’t the typical annoying kind of crowd here, so I was still enjoying my arrival here.
