I was pleased with myself having ended in what is probably Kunming’s largest commercial center. There were a lot of shopping centers and malls in the district of Wuhua and it seems that people like coming here. I like how the Chinese manage to make very functional cities despite the huge population they need to manage. Despite its size, the city is very orderly and generally clean. Kunming is not as ultra modern as Shanghai but it is getting there. Construction is all over the place, especially noticeable is the construction of the new metro as this is causing a lot of traffic jams in the city. I can’t wait to try it when it is done.

I was randomly walking around the Wuhua District looking for a place to eat when I saw what appears to be a church. The Saint John’s Evangelical Church in Kunming 圣约翰福音堂 is in a very hidden location and you probably won’t notice it unless you see the spires from far away. From outside you can already hear music playing as there was some service going on. It was like some praise and worship music translated into Chinese. It was too bad as you can’t really see much from the ground floor. Still it is interesting to see such institutions flourish in this part of the world. What’s more, Yunnan also has large populations of non-native religions particularly Islam. In fact, a fair number of historical figures of China were Muslim.
