Dinner at Lao Shu Dun Restaurant 老树墩

The park near my hostel in Kunming was quite amusing with all the old folk hanging out and having a good time at the park. I noticed that this place seemed to be down town and I was wondering what you can see here. There were a few shopping centers in the area but really nothing of note. I tried looking at a few cellphone shops and saw a lot of brands which never make it outside the country. It was quite amazing to see such variety here. I guess the Chinese market is big enough for all these players that they don’t really need to export. Anyway, I was going around and looking for a place which might sell good local food. Apart from crossing the bridge noodles, I don’t really know much about Yunnan food.

I entered a restaurant named Lao Shu Dun which seemed to have a lot of patrons which is a good sign and that their prices aren’t that bad either. It was towards the end of my China trip so I figured to treat myself a little bit. The place wasn’t exactly fancy either but they do seem to have a very extensive menu. I ordered their specialty the Tiger Skin Supreme Pork Slices 虎皮美极肉 and the Buddha Palm Eggplant 佛手茄子. Surprisingly, the specialty wasn’t very nice at all. The meat was quite tough and a chore to chew on. Maybe they should have made it tender first. On the other hand, the eggplant was heavenly although it looks extremely spicy, it really wasn’t that bad. I love spice and this is the way I like it.
