The road to the Tiger Leaping Gorge was getting higher and higher until I needed to walk to the edge of the road to see the Yangtze River, which by this time was already far below the mountain. It seems that everything was already set and I have a gorge right here. There are tall mountains on both sides of the river. The gorge no doubt was formed by continuous erosion of the mountain by the Yangtze River. It is considered one of the deepest gorges in the world, if not the deepest. Getting actual measurements here it quite tricky since you need a baseline on where to measure from. Do you measure from the top of the highest mountain in the area to the river below? However, make no mistake this is one of the deepest in the world.

The Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the major tourist attractions of Yunnan and it is part of a large UNESCO World Heritage site area called the Three Parallel Rivers in Yunnan. The Yangtze River is part of this trio. The Tiger Leaping Gorge is divided into three areas, the upper, middle and the lower Tiger Leaping Gorge. I was currently at the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, and the sign confirms this much to my relief. I wasn’t lost after all. However, it doesn’t seem like I was at my destination yet. I still have a few kilometers to go but the dark clouds have already caught up to me. And it started raining. I didn’t have an umbrella with me so I just took shelter under a overhanging rock.
