Pavillions at Nurhachi’s Palace

Receiving Area at One of the Pavillions

There are ten pavilions at Nurhachi’s Palace, five on each side. The palace grounds itself is quite unlike the palaces of Huang Taiji and Qianlong, here, there was a lot of space allocated with only the eight pavilions built close to the palace building. The pavilions here are all identical, differing only in the purpose of the pavilion. There were descriptions of the pavilions in each of their locations but I couldn’t really figure out what some of them meant.

Enumerating them, the were for the Left Wing Commander, Right Wing Commander, Bordered Yellow Banner, Plain Yellow Banner, Plain Red Banner, Plain White Banner, Bordered White Banner, Border Red Banner, Plain Blue Banner, Bordered Blue Banner. They were for significant people in the Manchu hierarchy and they were allocated their own small pavilions close to the Emperor. The pavilions themselves were open some were just for exhibits such as weaponry and uniforms. Others were exhibits for receiving guests much like a house. Whatever their use was here in the palace, Nurhachi made sure to keep them close by.
