Last Dinner at Beijing 北京

Fried Lamb Ribs in Beijing

Fried Lamb Ribs in Beijing

I will be leaving Beijing the next day and I basically spent the days just wandering around Wangfujing. I didn’t really seem just there as I just spent the rest of the afternoon catching up on my reading. When night came and I was trying to find a place to eat, I didn’t find anything interesting in Wangfujing. Remembering that the hostel where I was staying is a great food street, I head back and started prowling for a nice place to eat. By this time, there were already a lot of people in the area waiting outside for dinner. It was difficult to tell which ones were the good ones since all of them were full. I didn’t want to wait that long either so I chose other places. I came upon this Xijiang place which serve local Muslim cuisine. I am okay with their food but I was actually trying to find a place where I can have some lamb ribs. I have tried grilled lamb ribs in Shenzhen and Singapore and absolutely loved it.

There was a restaurant behind the hostel which was famous for their lamb ribs but it seems it has already closed down. I was definitely ready to spend some money to have good lamb ribs but it was not to be. The Xinjiang restaurant was staffed by Uighur people who are native to Xijiang. I found some unfamiliar food which I associated with Kazakhstan and I asked if she was ethnic Kazakh, but she was Uighur, which made sense. I ordered some fried lamb ribs and a bottle of Tsingtao Beer. The photo in the menu looked very appetizing and it really did turn out exactly like it. Unfortunately, the taste was a total let down. The ribs were really fried with some batter but the taste was very lacking. The grilled lamb ribs which I was looking for was tastier and juicier. Needless to say, I was disappointed. However, I probably shouldn’t blame them for that since I ordered a totally different dish. While I was finishing my ribs, I just contented myself with my Tsingtao Beer. Careful not to get drunk since I have a train to catch the next day.
