It is times like these the I really appreciate my decision to travel really light. My past visits to China were accompanied by large heavy bags which made me dread moving from one place to another. This time around I have really cut down on my stuff, however, this would also mean that I would have to wash clothes more often, which is a fair tradeoff. As the bus was pulling over the Shenyang bus station, which incidentally was just nearby the Shenyang train station, I quickly needed to figure out where to get accomodations. This was one stop which Hostelling international didn’t have a hostel. Lonely Planet China gave me a few suggestions and they seem to be all bunched together so I decided to take a chance there.

For some reason, Shenyang was so much colder than Ji’an and Harben even. Maybe it was really just one of those days where the temperature suddenly drops. Still my built in insulation and my jacket was able to fend off the bitter cold. Also for some reason which I can’t fathom, I decided to walk all the way to the hotel area. I only have a map of Shenyang from the guide book and it was accurate enough to guide me all the way day. I needed to remind myself that China maps are always appear smaller. When you end up tracing the map on foot, you find yourself walking several blocks to get to the correct spot. The hotel strip was at one corner of a very large square in what appears to be Shenyang’s central business district. With my not-so-heavy bag, I was off.
