Quick Lunch at Ji’an City 集安

When it seemed that the endless procession of burial mounds won’t end, our tour around the ruins of the Korguryo kingdom came to an end. No doubt that the burial mounds and the pyramid like structures of the ruins are historically and culturally significant, but after a while they tend to look alike. In fact, they do look alike. I was saved by the General’s Tomb when it turned out to look significantly different from the other tombs. My tour guide/driver was bringing me back to the Ji’an City when he picked up two ladies who were hiring his taxi. He is after all something like an illegal taxi which are common in smaller Chinese cities.

I don’t remember seeing a lot of legal taxis here and seeing as there was so few vehicles plying that route, I guess the ladies didn’t have much choice. Normally, I would be concerned that my hired transport would pick up another passenger in the middle of nowhere, but I have already gotten used to this kind of business in China and I don’t mind it at all. My driver seems to be trustworthy, then again, those are famous last words. The ladies engaged the driver in an animated conversation which I did not take part of. After dropping them off somewhere in the city, my driver proceeded to bring me back to Shengli Road.

I asked him for recommendations on where to eat as the restaurant scene seems to be quite sleepy here. He pointed out a restaurant just across the bus station, saying it was known for dumplings. I paid my driver and thanked him as he went off, in search of another customer. He probably won’t get another one this late in the day. People like him would probably hang around the bus station waiting for potential clients. As the bus from Changchun has already arrived, I don’t think he will be able to find another customer. Then again, he didn’t find me at the bus station either, so who knows.
