A Look at the Dark Songhua River 松花江 at Night

Just beyond the Flood Control Monumnet is the mighty Songhua river. You can consider the Songhua River as the life blood of Haerbin city. The shores of the Songhua River, at least the ones near the Zhongyang Street, have been converted in to steps which can also serve as seats for anything that happens on the Songhua River. This is more useful in the winter when the river freezes over but right now it was still very much fluid. It was also dark since it was already nighttime. The banks of the Songhua River are still alive with people milling about.

There isn’t much to see on the Songhua river this time of the night as it is quite broad and it is difficult to see the other shore from here. There were boats too but nothing really interesting there either. Most of the people here were just hanging about and just waiting for their food to go down. It was quite a nice experience to just feel the cold breeze from the river but it might be a little uncomfortable for me as I wasn’t used to the cold. The local government has done a good job to improving this area and I would consider it one of the best places to just hang out in Haerbin.
