Feeding the Tigers at the Siberian Tiger Park 东北虎林园

It actually felt better to be walking around the park instead of just being drove around in the a cramped bus. Not to mention that the bus also has grilled windows so it makes you wonder exactly who is in the cage? The walkway is a pleasant surprise for me as I thought we would be just exploring the Siberian Tiger Park bus all the way. The walkway allows us a different view of the tigers and maybe some close encounters with the tigers. Little did I know that I would be witness to such a spectacle.

There was a lady along the walkway and she was selling of all things, meat. The meat was certainly for eating, but not for humans. It was for the tigers. Visitors pay up to get the chance to feed a tiger. The meat is shoved through the fence and the tigers wolfed it down in one gulp. I doubt that was enough to fill them. They still hung around where the humans were hoping another one would send them some food. They got their wish. For a CNY 100, a live chicken as lifted through a small opening on top of the fence.

The chicken was very much alive as it was quickly pounced on by the tigers. This is where you get to see the tigers in action. This is also where you see which one is the boss. As the chicken was quickly possessed by one of the more dominant ones. A few tigers would lurk around the chicken hopefully to snatch it away but the dominant tiger successfully defended his prize catch. It is not very natural, not to mention cruel, but the tigers get to practice their hunting skills, although a chicken isn’t really considered difficult prey. It was a macabre scene which I would remember for the rest of my trip.
