Into the Tiger’s Den at the Siberian Tiger Park 东北虎林园

My impression of a visit to the Siberian Tiger Park would be just walking through the zoo. The Singapore Zoo is one of the most impressive zoos I have been to and it also has tigers. The tigers were quite far away from the people and we were separated by a ravine for good reason. The Siberian Tiger Park in Haerbin takes a very different approach. The visitors are loaded into a bus to visit the park. The windows of the buses themselves are grilled naturally to protect the passengers so that no one gets eaten. It was much like a African safari except this was done with a bus. There is another option of taking a smaller vehicle, much like one for safaris, which I have seen photos of. The vehicle is low enough for the tigers to climb up and sleep. Of course the windows of the vehicle are also grilled just in case.

Tigers need lots of space to roam around. They are very territorial and usually only stay with their own family. The entire complex of the Siberian Tiger Park is surrounded by very high fences and entrances and exits are double gated. Gates are not opened at the same time. Our bus entered the first gate and waited for it to close before opening the second gate. It was much like a scene from Jurassic Park where the dinosaurs were kept inside the park by massive fences. It was quite thrilling to see the second gate open as we all waited in anticipation of what will happen next.
