The Saint Alekseyev Church is an example of a Baroque style church. The main feature of the church is its onion dome which typifies churches of Russian origin. It is not very clear why these became a defining feature of Russian Churches but they are and they are quite widespread in the countries and obviously in the territories which they touched. The onion dome of Saint Alekseyev Church isn’t as prominent as the one from Saint Sophia Church but it is enough for me to identify that it is a Russian inspired church. The fact that this church is a Catholic church belies its history.

The Saint Alekseyev Church in Haerbin used to be a Russian Orthodox church but after the Russians left, it has been turned over to Haerbin Catholic Church. Come to think of it, who was Saint Alekseyev, I can’t say I heard about him. I wanted to see the inside of the church but the main door was closed and I didn’t know how to get inside. I still find it strange when the church closes in the middle of the day as this is the time when people would be coming to the church. It is possible that the number of churchgoers here in Haerbin isn’t that big to warrant keeping the church open the whole day. It is said that the church interiors are quite impressive, all the more frustrating is not to be able to get in.
