My explorations of Haerbin has taken me away from the relative familiarity of the Daoli District to the unfamiliar Nangang District. A bus behind the hostel took me to the Nangang district which is a popular commercial area in Haerbin. However, I didn’t come here for mere shopping, I was out looking for heritage areas in the city. The map in the hostel pointed me this way and I didn’t really know what I was looking for. The main road here is Guogeli Avenue 果戈理大街 and it used to be a place where a lot of Russians settled. This has got to be interesting.

The bus was quite convenient as it announces the next stop so you can prepare. This is only useful for you if you understand Chinese. There is actually an English translation in the announcement but it is either something like “Next station (place name in Chinese)” which I think is rather pointless, another variation is that there is a proper translation but the sound is so bad you wouldn’t understand it. Anyway, I thought I heard my stop and I quicky got off the bus. I was actually very close to my destination and I didn’t know it yet.
