Sophia Square by Day

It was almost noon time but the day wasn’t especially nice. The sky was hazy the whole morning and I can’t get nice blue sky shots. It would have been nice if it snowed here at least I would be able to get shots of Saint Sophia Cathedral covered in snow. The nice thing about Haerbin is that it isn’t as heavily touristed. This is just right for me as it doesn’t interfere with my photo taking. I would get a better view of how the people live. As a result of this, the Sophia Square, the square where Saint Sophia Cathedral is, is practically empty.

The square used to be a mass of buildings which completely hid the beautiful Saint Sophia Church, however an effort by the city government got rid of all those buildings and cleared everything away. Any commercial establishments have been moved underground. The square itself is surrounded by several European style buildings which are now commercial establishments. However, the Saint Sophia Church still occupies a prominent spot in the square. A fountain was built near the church in subsequent years but I didn’t see it running.
