Sophia Square was certainly one of the highlights of a visit to the northern Chinese city of Haerbin. The square now serves as the centerpiece of Haerbin’s attempt to promote itself as an architecture and cultural center in China. It might not be obvious now, but Sophia Square wasn’t a square before, in fact, you probably couldn’t even see the cathedral as it was surrounded by buildings, that was before they were all torn down.

However, the surrounding area of Sophia Square has benefitted from their famous neighbor. Giant shopping malls sprouted on the fringes of Sophia Square. One of them looked more like a Chinese shopping mall, while the one directly across it looks more upscale, in fact it even has a Louis Vuitton shop. In this respect, Haerbin is a showcase of contrasts, and a melting pot of cultures, it is quite unlike any other Chinese city.
