It was delightful to walk down this very elegant European themed pedestrian shopping street named Zhongyang Street in Haerbin. Oweing to its heritage, Zhongyang Street sports architecture inherited from the Russians and the Europeans. This is much less intimidating than walking along the Bund in Shanghai as the colonial era buildings in along the Bund were much larger. Zhongyang Street somehow has a small town feel to it – that is until you encounter the Chinese crowds who are here to stay.

Zhongyang Street for all its busy-ness is quite well organized, that there are no random hawkers. Instead there was a row of snack stalls along one of the major streets along Zhongyang Street. At the moment they were still setting up. The action begins when the sun and the temperature goes down. There were already some stalls open and they have the traditional northern China snacks, which I first encountered in Beijing the previous year. Candied hawthorne on a stick is a common snack here and it is perfect for this kind of weather since the candy coating the fruit won’t melt that easily. It seems I would have to wait until the sun sets, I’m sure it will be a lot busier than it is right now.
