My excited friends apparently did much more homework than I did when I was here the previous year. By the time I got to Shanghai, it was already the end of my fruitful trip and I was trying to take it slow in Shanghai. It was only through the recommendation of my friend that I got to know about Zhouzhuang. I would agree that it was indeed a very picturesque place, however, thousands of other Chinese think so too. As a result, I didn’t get to enjoy Zhouzhuang as much as I wanted to. I did however managed to get numerous photos of the place.

Zhouzhuang is considered one of several water towns in the area. This part of Jiangsu is surrounded by water from the Yangtze River and several towns sprung up here. The water towns became famous across China and they have become symbols of what China used to be. Water constantly flows throughout the town and the main mode of transportation of the locals before modernization is by boat. Of these water town, the most well known of them will have to be Zhouzhuang, hence it earned the moniker China’s Number One Water Town 中国第一水乡. I would have wanted to visit the other water towns but my friend insisted on going here. Oh well, they probably all look alike anyway.
